In translating a language, there are a large number of difficulties found such as how to translate English language as source language (SL) into Indonesian as target language (TL) since three words in English such as the prepositions at, on and by can have many translation equivalents in Indonesian. Thus, it is very interesting to analyze the function and translation equivalents of the English prepositions at, on and by.
The problems that the writer would like to discuss in this study are:
-
a) What are the functions of the English prepositions at, on, and by found in
the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green?
-
b) What are the translation equivalents of the English preposition at, on and by in Indonesian based on the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green?
The aims of this study are:

The data of this study include the English prepositions at, on and by which were taken from a novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and translated by Dwijani Nimpoeno.
The study used library research method in collecting the data. The method was done by reading both English and Indonesian novels. Then, the writer was finding out the sentences that contain the prepositions at, on and by. After that, those prepositions were marked, underlined and retyped based on both in English and Indonesian.
The collected data were analyzed using the qualitative method. They are described in detail based on theories related to the topic of discussion. The selected data were identified and analyzed to determine the functions and the translation equivalents of the English language prepositions at, on, and by based on the concept and theoretical framework.
Based on the result of the study, there are some equivalents of the prepositions at, on and by in Indonesian such as;
-
5.1 Preposition at translated into di, pada, dalam, atas, and kepada.
One example of the English preposition at which is translated into di in Indonesian
SL: …taking the elevator is a Last Days kind of activity at Support Group, …(Green., 2012: 8)
TL: …memakai lift adalah sejenis aktivitas Hari Terakhir di pertemuan Kelompok Pendukung,.. (Nimpoeno., 2014: 16)
The prepositional phrase at support group is translated into di pertemuan Kelompok Pendukung. The functions of the preposition in SL and TL are used to denote a place since both prepositions describe a particular area where someone is available.
-
5.2 Preposition on translated into di, pada, di atas, dengan, and ke.
One example of the English preposition on which is translated into di in Indonesian
SL: I was standing with my chuck Taylors on the very edge of the curb. (Green., 2012: 20)
TL: Aku berdiri dengan sepatu kets Chuck Taylorku berada persis di pinggir jalan. (Nimpoeno., 2014: 32)

One example of the English preposition by is translated into dengan.
SL: They didn’t seem too surprised by my arrival, which made sense: The fact that Augustus made me feel special did not necessarily indicate that I was special. (Green., 2012: 27)
TL: Mereka seakan tidak begitu terkejut dengan kedatanganku, dan itu masuk di akal: Fakta bahwa Augustus membuatku merasa istimewa tidak selalu menunjukan bahwa aku memang istimewa. (Nimpoeno., 2014: 41)
The prepositional phrase by my arrival is translated into dengan kedatanganku. The function of the preposition in SL and TL are used to denote means, since it answers the question starting with how.
