Abstract:
According to WHO, in 2012 approximately 6.7 million people diedbecause stroke, making this disease as one of the threee major causes of losing years of life because ofmortality and premature death. Uric acid, which is a result from purin metabolism in human’s body, isfound to have a correlation with some of cardiovascular diseases’ risk factors which is also risk factorsof stroke. But, the association between uric acid and stroke itself is remain controversial. This studywas an analytical cross-sectional study, using secondary data to find out the association betweenserum uric acid levels with ischemic stroke events in patients at RSUP Sanglah. Samples that wereused in this study was taken with consecutive sampling method for all the samples that were matchedto the inclusion and exclusion criterias until the minimal amount of the samples needed was reached. This study used medical records data in 2016 with 25 cases of ischemic stroke and 25 controls. In thisstudy, it was found that the mean serum uric acid in cases group was 6.12±1.88 mg/dl and was higherthan controls’ mean serum uric acid (5.23±1.36 mg/dl). Mean serum uric acid in men (5.98±1.54mg/dl) was higher in women (5.27±1.84 mg/dl). However, from Chi-square test, it was found thatthere was no significant association between serum uric acid level and ischemic stroke events. Basedon this study, we can conclude that serum uric acid has no significant association with ischemic strokeevents. Keywords: ischemic stroke, serum uric acid level, RSUP Sanglah”
