Taboo Words In The Movies “Easy A” And “The Change-Up”

Abstrak
Kata Tabu merupakan fenomena yang terdapat dalam bahasa, karena kata tabu merupakan yang vulgar dan dapat menyinggung orang lain dalam percakapan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis, menjelaskanf ungsi dan menampilkan jenis kata-kata tabu yang mendominasi film Easy A dan The Change-Up. Jenis kata-kata tabu dapat diklasifikasikan dalam 10 jenis berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Jay (1992) dan fungsi kata-kata tabu berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Holmes (1992). Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan dari kedua film, yaitu terdapat 10 jenis kata tabu, 5 fungsi kata tabu dan jenis Insult & Slurs yang mendominasi film Easy A. Sedangkan dalam film The ChangeUp hanya terdapat 8 jenis kata tabu, 5 fungsi kata tabu dan jenis Vulgarity yang mendominasi film tersebut.

Taboo word is a forbidden word in a culture, because such a word is not allowed to be uttered, and it includes sex, death, genitalia, intermarriage and many more on the use of offensive language. Kusuma (2013) stated that taboo words are usually used in daily conversations. It can be found when people express their emotions, such as emotion of anger like “fuck”; “shit”, or shocked feeling like “holy shit”;”damn it”. Taboo words are a unique phenomenon, because they may produce embarrassment, disgust, and social norm violation in the society concerned.
The problems of the study can be formulated as follows:

1. What types of taboo words are used in “Easy A and The Change-Up” movie?

2. What functions of taboo words are found in the dialog of “Easy A and The ChangeUp” movie?

3. What is the dominant type of taboo words used in “Easy A and The Change-Up” movie?
The aims of this study are:

Change-Up movie
The data were collected through observation method and documentation method. Observation is the first step method to collect the data before documentation method. Documentation method is the supporting method of this study. There were two steps in collecting the data. First, downloading the movies from http://www.ganool.com/easy-a-movies-2010.html and http://www.ganool.com/the-change-up-movies-2011.html then watching every scene in detail and using English subtitle. Second, note taking the taboo words showed in the movies for every scene while watching the movies, the utterances which are considered appropriate data were noted. There are 20 scenes from Easy A and 25 scenes from The Change-Up movie. But there are 10 scenes selected from Easy A and 12 scenes were selected from The Change-Up.
A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the function and types of taboo words. After all the data collected, the data were classified based on the types according to Jay (1992) and the function of taboo words according to Holmes (1992). The data were analyzed and selected to a certain number needed for the type of data presentation with the purpose of describing the various types of taboo words and the
function of taboo words in the dialog. After the data were analyzed, the next step was counting the types of taboo words to see dominant types of taboo words in movies.
This study used the descriptive method in presenting the data related to the subject of this study. The data were categorized, depending on each scene. Furthermore, each scene was presented descriptively.
Olive : Call Micah. Tell him I said he’s an asshole. Tell him that I confessed to giving him Chlamydia. (01:22:05)
Olive said he’s an asshole to Mrs. Griffin in which “he” refers to Micah. This term is categorized belong to the insult type. Olive was mad because Micah lied to his mother that Olive who gave him Chlamydia. He covered his relationship with Mrs. Griffin by accusing Olive. This utterance is categorized as having the metalinguistic function.
The total of taboo words that were analyzed based on the main character and supporting character’s conversation in Easy A movie are 18. The dominant type of taboo words in this movie are insult and slurs. Easy A movie has complete types of taboo words, ten types of taboo words based on the theory developed by Jay (1992) are found in this movie.
Mitch : Okay, well, you’re in luck, because Tatiana is stupid fucking hot.
Beautiful face, legs a mile long, perfect ass, blonde hair, and huge boobs. (00:18:13)
Mitch describes Tatiana’s physically in detail. He tells Dave that Tatiana has huge boobs. This term is categorized as vulgar type, because Mitch describes boobs or breast, the women’s sensitive area. This utterance is categorized as having metalinguistic function.
From the analyzed data, total of taboo words in The Change-Up movie are 20 words. The taboo words that showed up in the movie had been categorized based on Jay theory. The difference from the result of Easy A movie is The Change-Up does not contain blasphemy and scatology types. According to the third problem of this thesis, the dominant type of taboo words used in The Change-Up movie is vulgarity type.
This study compares Easy A and The Change-Up movies to see the difference between those movies. The differences are, Easy A movie has 10 types of taboo words and The Change-Up has 8 types of taboo words. The dominant type of taboo words in the first movie is Insult and Slurs while Vulgarity is the dominant type in the second movie. There were 5 functions of taboo words which had been identified in both movies; they are: expressive function, referential function, directive function, metalinguistic function, and phatic function.
